Mosaic

I live at the base of Tucki Mountain, below a gravel wash that leads to Mosaic Canyon, one of the more popular day hikes in Death Valley. I get off work in the afternoon and head up the wash to Mosaic, passed thirsty bushes, away from the lonely boys working at Stovepipe, away from air conditioner sounds, and tourists.

—An 18 foot pour off.

I climb a bighorn sheep trail to get around but it’s about to get dark and dinner is ready at the cafeteria. I turn around.

On the way back I stop to watch a little gray bird chase moths.
