Valles Caldera

“They found debris all the way in Iowa.”
1.2 million years ago a supervolcano erupted and left the 14 mile wide Valles Caldera located in the Jemez Mountains (pronounced “Heh-mez”).


The forrested bump in the middle is a rhyolite lava dome! FACTS!
So, much of what I’ve seen in northern New Mexico has a lot to do with that eruption.

  1. I am so curious where this route takes you through this area. We live up in the Jemez, right near this Hot Springs (is this Spence or McCauley?). I know you said Brett will have his maps available online soon, but do you have the map for this specific section that you could share?
