When it snows

Grand Enchantment Trail, East of the Gila Hot Springs, April, 2015

I wake up to my poncho tarp kissing my nose. Snow flakes the size of my palm plummet from the atmosphere. My anxiety kicks in…Ok I’m warm and dry…but I feel claustrophobic.

Today I’m supposed to climb to the Continental Divide, but it doesn’t sound appealing in a blizzard. So I’m going to aim for a privy located only 10 miles away. No matter how smelly, it will be my palace.

The weather can’t make up its mind; it snows, hails, rains, and teases me with intermittent sunshine. Out loud I chant Sun! Sun! Sun! as I hike but, it doesn’t work. Mother Nature do what she do.

Herds of elk, 30 at a time, go about their business. Why can’t I be like the elk? They’re not running for an outhouse.
